What we play for... the Big Game Trophy
The Glendale
city champion is determined by the winner of the Glendale vs. Hoover water polo game. The "Big Game Trophy"
is earned by the winning team when the game is played at either GHS or Hoover highs. If the teams meet in the league
tournament, regular tournament game or CIF, those contests do not count
in determining which school gets one year ownership of the trophy but those games do count towards which team earns
the right to be called city champion. The city championship is determined by which team wins the most games against
the other in a season. Normally the teams just play once but there have been years when the teams played multiple
times. In those cases the " trophy" goes to the team that wins the game played in the GHS or Hoover pool
and the city championship goes to the team which wins the most games.

In the early days beginning in 1961, Glendale
and Hoover played each other two times per season, with each team playing host once. From 1976 to 1981, the teams
played just once a year, alternating home sites each year.
From 1982 until present, the teams play once a year
at alternating sites and have the chance to meet again at a neutral site in the Pacific League tournament. The
city championship trophy can only change hands in that first meeting of the league season at the game which is
held either at Glendale and Hoover.

polo All-American at USC in 1964.
The lone Nitro goal was scored by Bill Mellies. Hoover led 8-0 after the first quarter and 11-1 at halftime. They
