GHS HAS GONE GREEN
The Senior Class of 2008 is conducting a recycling program this year to raise money to keep the price of the Senior Prom down and to provide the school with a nice class gift. Seniors can trade in their cans and bottles for a reduced price on their prom. Interested in helping us out? Contact Dr. Sherrick at (818) 242-3161, ext. 1390 if you need your recyclables picked up

GO GREEN!
One person can make a difference. Conserving energy and resources also saves you money.

SPEAK UP
Just in case you get a chance to ask any of the Presidential candidates a question or five, here's a list to get you started.  Or, you could write them an email.  Let ASB know what kind of feedback you get, and we'll add it to this site!  :)

Five Questions You Should Ask the Presidential Candidates regarding Environmental Issues
1. How would your administration plan to reduce global warming emissions?
2. How will your administration work with other nations to reduce global warming pollution worldwide?
3. How would you balance federal funding for public transportation and road construction?
4. How do you respond to industries who try to argue that we have to choose between jobs and clean energy?
5. What are your policies on new coal fired power plants and new nuclear power plants?

Global warming and clean energy are important topics and the candidates are paying attention. Polls consistently show that a majority of Americans think global warming is one of the most pressing issues facing the country.

News Updates:
The Bush Administration's "Environmental Protection Agency" denied California and 16 other states the right to adopt stricter automobile emissions standards than federal rules require.

What Others Are Doing:
* Paris is joining Amsterdam in making bicycles available citywide for free of a small fee.

* The city of San Francisco passed a ban on plastic shopping bags at large supermarkets and chain pharmacies, the first such law in the United States. When your grocery clerk or bagger asks you "paper or plastic?" what will your answer be?

* Canada became the second country, after Australia, to announce a ban on incandescent light bulbs.

* UPS is bolstering its delivery fleet with 300 new vehicles that run on cleaner-burning propane or compressed natural gas.

* Virgin Atlantic and Air New Zealand are racing to be the first airline to test-fly a biofueled jet.

* Tully's Coffee has started an in-store collection program for cups and other compostable waste.

* The Israeli embassy in the United States is switching its fleet to hybrid-electric vehicles.

Tips:
When you buy your paper products, why not grab the recycled ones?
Either USE those plastic bags over again, or bring your own to the store. Only 1 to 3 percent are actually recycled. What a waste.

Combine trips in the car.
If you or your parents have to stop by the bank, post office and market, don't make three separate trips. That wastes gasoline. Do all the errands you can in one trip.

Turn lights out when you leave a room.
No one is asking you to keep your apartment or home in total darkness, but if you leave a room and know you won't be back for a while, turn off the light in that room. It saves electricity and wear on the light bulb, which will save you money on your electric bill and will save you from having to replace the light bulb so often. This also goes for computers, monitors and televisions that are left on for hours at a time. Turn them off if they are not going to be in use.

No light loads.
Make sure your clothes washer loads are full. It takes the same amount of water to wash a load that is only half full. Make every load count. For dishwashers: Wash by hand everything you can. If you must use a dishwasher, load it fully.

Recycle, recycle, recycle.
Plastic, aluminum, and glass with a CRV value goes to the recycling center in your local supermarket parking lot (the closest one to GHS is the Ralphs at Colorado and Verdugo). Some grocery items that have no CRV value still can be recycled. You should always put your finished plastic gallon milk cartons in the correct recycling bin, not the regular trash bin. Putting items that could be recycled in your regular trash means that more space is used needlessly at landfills.

Cars That Never Need Gas
Wish you never had to fill up again? Darrell Dickey doesn't. He drives
an electric car that's charged by photovoltaic panels on the roof of
his house. He's one of three drivers who told us how they got into
owning cars that are charged by wind or solar power. As Dickey puts
it, "For $45,000 we got a car and fuel for the rest of our lives."

Hawaii Passes Landmark Solar Roofs Bill
The Hawaii state legislature passed a landmark measure on May 1 that
would make the state the first in the nation to require solar water
heaters as a standard feature on all new homes. The solar roofs bill,
which received unanimous support in the House and only two dissenting
votes in the Senate, was the top priority of the Hawaii Sierra Club
this legislative session.

"This is the type of transformative policy that will define Hawaii's
clean energy future," says Hawaii Sierra Club Director Jeff Mikulina.
"We are the Saudi Arabia of sun -- every house in the state should be
tapping into this free resource."

What's Right with Kansas
Also on May 1, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius rejected an ultimatum
by the state legislature to approve two new coal-fired power plants in
the state. "It's great to see a leader get the big picture," said
Kansas Sierra Club leader Bill Griffith. "Governor Sebelius is a rare
breed of politician who examines long-term policy implications and
truly does what is best for the citizens she represents."
