Phases of the Girls' Water Polo Program:
Although the water polo season for girls is in the winter months, it is a year round activity. Those players who
participate in ALL phases of the year round program will find that they have
a distinct advantage over players who skip certain parts.

Phase 1-
February through May...
Swim Team
Being on the Glendale High swim team is recommended for all water polo players, but the swim team is looking for
only those athletes who are serious about becoming better swimmers and are committed to making a positive impact
on the swim team. Those water polo players who lack the necessary discipline or maturity it takes to compete and
remain in good standing on the swim team will need to look for another activity. There may be a spring water polo
conditioning class offered. Contact the coaching staff to find out more information.

Phase 2-
May and June
Spring conditioning
At the conclusion of the swim season,
water polo practices may begin. These workouts generally last for two hours each day and go until the end of the
school year in June. This is a great time to encourage your friends to join the team.

Phase 3-
June and July...
Summer League
Summer is the time of the year when players play the most games. The are no restrictions on the amount of games
a team can play during the summer months. The best teams in our area look to squeeze in 30 or 40 games in the summer.
Summer League practices and games cost money and the price is determined by the Glendale Unified School District.

summer league costs. A player must have a valid USA water polo membership card in order to play in any summer league games. See the GHS
coaches for information about the summer. The summer season runs 5 weeks.

Phase 4-
September through November...
Swim Conditioning
Once school begins we encourage all girls involved in the aquatics program to be in the Fall Swim Conditioning
class taught by Coach Garberson. It is Mr. Garberson's discretion whether or not you will be allowed to be in the
class. There are try-outs for the team. Listen to the school bulletin or see Coach Garberson for try-out dates
and time standards. Those ladies who do not make the swim conditioning class may enroll in the fall water polo
class.

Phase 5-
November through February...
THE SEASON
All of the other phases have been meant to prepare you for this phase.
It is recommended that water polo players not
have a job during this phase.
In late October or early November the rosters of each team will be posted on this web site. Your placement on a
team is determined by your 100-yard freestyle time, overall attitude, commitment history and water polo ability.
The most skilled players as selected by the coaching staff will make up the varsity team. The others will be on
the Junior Varsity team. All players are expected to enroll in the 6th period water polo class.
Players will be able to move up to varsity or down to JV depending on their ability and progress during the season.
All players must have a physical exam and athletic department paperwork turned into the coach in order to play
during the school year.
Download the paperwork, fill it out and return it to the coaching staff.
