TIPS
GHS Community Service Awards Program
Don't worry...
Think about what you're going to say before you call. Write down a few notes
if you need to. Remember that the agencies you call are grateful for volunteers,
so they should be happy to hear from you. Also remember that you have great things
to offer -- your time, your personality and your skills.
Don't be shy...
Be sure to speak clearly. Don't rush or talk too softly.
Find the right person...
If you can, ask for someone by name. If you don't have a name, ask for the Volunteer
Coordinator or just say that you'd like to talk to someone about becoming a volunteer.
Be friendly...
Introduce yourself by giving your first and last name and by saying that you're
a student at Glendale High School.
Explain your needs...
Explain that you're participating in Glendale High School's Community Service
Awards Program and that you have an interest in their agency or program. Ask if there
are openings for volunteers.
Arrange an interview...
If there are openings, ask if you may have an interview. If there are no openings,
ask if they know of a similar agency that needs volunteers.
Be polite...
Before you hang up, be sure to thank the person for his/her time.
