August 30, 2021: GTA Negotiations Update

Posted Date: 07/18/2023

On Monday, August 30, Glendale Unified school and district leaders met with members of the Glendale Teachers Association (GTA) bargaining team. During the meeting, the two sides discussed a proposed memorandum of understanding (MOU) related to the effects of returning to full in-person instruction while mitigating the impacts of COVID-19 during the 2021-22 school year.

Glendale Unified students returned to in-person learning on August 18. An independent study option is available for students and families who need it. The District offered the opportunity to negotiate independent study based on a demand to bargain initially issued by GTA on August 9. GTA requested to discuss independent study at a later date.

Updates since the previous negotiations session on August 13

  • On August 27, Glendale Unified posted written guidelines for short-term virtual learning in the event a full or partial class must quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure (AR 6157 COVID-19 Continuity of Learning Plan – Quarantined Students). The written guidance establishes that, in the event an in-person class is required to quarantine, class instruction pivot to short-term virtual learning wherein instruction and/or services are provided through Zoom or another video conferencing platform.
  • On August 31, the Glendale Unified Board of Education will vote on a resolution requiring all Glendale Unified employees to show proof of vaccination by November 1, 2021.
  • Should a unit member need to quarantine due to COVID-19 illness or exposure or to care for a family member who is quarantined, the unit member should utilize time available from the COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave Bank. Should the Sick Leave Bank not be extended by legislators, the District will provide up to five days of supplemental paid sick leave.
  • In addition to wearing masks indoors at all times, all students and employees must wear masks outdoors during dismissal and drills.
  • Volunteers on campuses must show proof of vaccination and remain outside for their volunteer duties.

Glendale Unified is committed to providing a safe learning and working environment for all students and employees. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the District has implemented multiple layers of mitigation to protect against the spread of COVID-19. The District’s health and safety measures are continuously updated based on guidelines from the California and Los Angeles County Public Health Departments.
